Frans Masereel (1889-1972) is an important woodcut artist, who perhaps invented the idea of the graphical novel.
Two images. From his Book THE SUN (1919). Interesting is that Lawrence Ferlinghetti made an American edition and this was the reason why I started talking with him in City Lights Bookshop in 1995. Ended in the Vesuvius Bar across the street and the rest I do not exactly remember!
I would like to dedicate this woodcut to Mumia and all other so-called offenders.
From his book DER WEG DER MENSCHEN (1964) shows that the artist did not abandon his thirst for revolution and social change near the end of his life.
