An update on Sharmila Chanu

Dear Guido

Just a short update on Sharmila. She did receive your mail art and PetrolPetals. I owe you both. She received a fair bit of support from mainland India and abroad last month. There appears to be something happening. I am preparing for the worst but it may work out. After having kept her under indefinite detention without trial for 13 years in long periods of solitary confinement they are now putting on trial in both Imphal and Delhi. The trial in Imphal begins next Tuesday 13 May. The trial in delhi is 28th may. It gets a bit complicated to explain how they can do that. But in essence once the trial is over in Imphal she will be automatically released and allowed to die over a few weeks. There is no other possible verdict. If they find her guilty she is released based on 13 years time served. If she is found not-guilty she is released without conditions. I was keen to get her to trial in Delhi because it ended her isolation in Imphal and would have made no difference to her incarceration and force feeding in Imphal. The election results are on May 16 but unless Manipuris turn out to support her next Tuesday they appear to be behaving like Nazis retreating before advancing allied soldiers. They will kill her just before AFSPA is removed from Manipur.

I owe you a proper mail art more than that. I know that you can do only small things. But if people did small things it would be enough. Anything you can do even just telling one person would be very helpful. She isn't dead yet. By the end of this month the dust will clear a new PM will be in Power in Delhi, then a new CM of Delhi will be appointed. They can the trial out for months or years or they can get to a verdict within days. If they thought many people cared they wouldn't just let her die after torturing her and realizing they couldn't break her.

Thank you so much for the mail art. I received her last parcel two days ago. But when I tried to contact helpers in manipur the only people who want to talk to me are now are the government informants and they obviously don't want to help.

But things may become clearer over the next few months so I am rewriting to those who have helped in the past if you have time for one last effort. Another letter or anything you think might help.

We have been engaged to be married for some years just need to organize a prison break and art attack is one of the methods. How's it going I dunno maybe a few more years.

I live in a small village in Co Galway Ireland, Portumna. She would find it difficult to send mail art in return so I shall do so on her behalf. The reason I mention Portumna is that the Irish take poetry and art very seriously. In the Spring/Summer there will be Arts Festivals here so artists from around southern ireland will exhibit poets singers musicians dancers. I can send you the freebies they offer. Not expensive but how else will you get programmes for arts festivals from Portumna. To give you a measure for an ordinary poetry reading by locals maybe 100 plus people will turn up at the local pub to listen. This is a small village of no more than a few thousand souls.

That's the deal. For now I can send something kitsch from one of the local stores, maybe postcards of portumna or a pen with a green irish sheep on it. But come Spring Summer I can give you more respectable stuff.

If you check out her name you'll find out she's the real deal. Please don't signpost me groups I should really try. If you think anyone will listen more then please don't let me stop you contacting them for her. What I am offering is art for art. I am not a do -gooder. I am if you must press what Kierkegaard called a Knight of Faith unless of course wiki got that wrong too.

About Sharmila

She has been campaigning via non-violent compassion (satyagraha) for the removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act which since 1958 has given absolute immunity to the Indian Army while on patrol in Manipur. She is a very simple woman and has been imprisoned for the past 13 years for long periods in solitary kept alive by naso-gastric intubation. She is a beautiful beautiful person. But she has always been allowed mail. And any positive contact does lift her spirits.

Manipur is an area that bind by The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 - AFSPA - under Indian Forces, for more than 50 years. The formulated provisions of the Act grant extraordinary powers to the Indian armed forces in the “disturbed areas” where it is applicable. The Act has been at the heart of concerns about human rights violations in the region, such as arbitrary killings, torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and enforced disappearances. Its continued application has led to numerous protests, notably the longstanding hunger strike by Irom Sharmila Chanu.

Separatist insurgency[

A separatist insurgency began in 1964, although momentum to a more violent phase did not occur until 1978.^[22] The Separatists demand a sovereign state separate from the Union of India, a claimed lack of development, plundering of local resources, and a general discontent is part of their argument.^[22][23][23] The international Human Rights Watch, argues that human rights violations by Indian Security Forces have only fuelled the insurgency.^[24][24] It adds that the Indian Army have at times acted with impunity as anti-terrorism laws in the state make prosecution of human rights violators difficult.^{[17][25][26][27]}

There are currently 34 groups, including non-violent ones, that demand independence from India.^[22] In 1999, some of these groups coalesced into an alliance organization called the "Manipur People's Liberation Front." Of these, the three most prominent are the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Peoples Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), andPLA of Manipur. The UNLF is estimated to have 2500 active militants, the PREPAK with 1500, and PLA with 3000.^[22] The Indian news organization, Rediff, wrote in 2004:

As of today, Manipur is the worst case scenario in the north-east as far as militancy is concerned. Apart from the fact that there are more militant groups in the state than anywhere else – at least seven prominent groups operate in Manipur – the rivalries between these outfits often leads to greater violence.^[28]

The Kuki insurgent groups want a separate state for the Kukis to be carved out from the present state of Manipur. The Kuki insurgent groups are under two umbrella organisation, Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United Peoples Forum.^[29]

The Zomi Revolutionary Army is a nationalist/separatist group dedicated to the defense of Zomis and the reunification of ethnic Zomi people in Burma (Chin State), Bangladesh (Chittagong Hill Tracts), and northeast India (Manipur and Mizoram). It aims to unite all Zomi people under one governing unit, known as a Zogam, meaning "land of the Zomi" under the Indian Union

The situation is further complicated because insurgent groups are not united in the same cause. The Nagas wish to annexe part of Manipur and merge with a greater Nagaland or Nagalim, which is in conflict with Meitei insurgent demands for the integrity of their vision of an independent state.^[22] There were many tensions between the different tribes and have witnessed numerous clashes between Naga and Kukis, Meiteis and Muslims.

Artists’ Union England is a new trade union for professional visual and applied artists.

We aim to represent artists at strategic decision-making levels and positively influence the role artists play within society.

We aim to challenge the economic inequalities in the art world and to negotiate fair pay and better working conditions for artists.

We aim to work with other unions, arts organisations, government bodies and cultural institutions whilst remaining both independent and transparent.

We aim towards consensus decision-making, an active grass roots membership and involvement over a wide geographical spread.

From 1st May there will be a three-month grace period until 1st August 2014 in which there will be no membership fees. All members who join before 1st July will be invited to take part in a collective decision making process to determine the initial priorities and annual membership fee of the union.

°  the refusal of war as a destruction of people’s common togetherness and solidarity

War was conducted by those who did not know eacht other for the bank accounts of those who knew each other quite well (to paraphrase Valéry)

°  the refusal of any kind of war nostalgia or the recuperation of so-called peace by institutions like the EC or the UN (who have no problem launching new wars « in the name of peace and freedom»). War which is the destruction of humanity is now waged in the name of humanity. Talking about Orwellian newspeak, this is another fine example of applications during the last decade or so...

° the backing of a total rehabilitation for all soldiers who were executed by their own commanders and governments « as example », with excuses as cowardice, or desertion, or you have lost your equipment and other nonsense

° the backing of independent historical research on what happened during these « great » wars

You can fill in yourself other angles of interests, the list is limitless

Eerst het vreten en dan pas de moraal.

De filosofie van de honger verhindert de honger naar filosofie.

Ondervoede buiken willen eerst en vooral eten.

Eens de honger gestild is er voldoende lucht of ademruimte voor

kunst en kultuur en meer.

Soms moet je aan de meeste intellectuelen met hun weldoorvoede buiken opnieuw het ABC aanleren.

Wat doe je met de broodnodige revolte?

Als een volwassene minder dan 50 kg weegt, denkt hij niet aan opstand. Hij probeert te overleven.

Hij is als een krijgsgevangene in een uitroeingskamp.

Hij is een kankerlijder vechtend met de dood. En niet met het systeem.

Voor mij is er weinig verschil tussen een mens worstelend met terminale ziektes en een andere op weg naar een crematorium in Dachau of Auschwitz.

Een burgerlijke professor met dito loonzak probeert wijlen Ludo uit te leggen in Le Soir.

Bezoekers in een groot restaurant zien de keuken niet.

Hij legt dit uit als het verschil tussen de buitenactie en de zichtbaarheid van een actieve linkse partij en de geheime verborgen keuken van het verdachte partijapparaat, zijn kaders en leiders.

Stront aan de knikker, kameraden!

De restaurantmetafoor wil enkel zeggen dat klanten NIET het werk, de uitbuiting en het lijden zien of kunnen zien van de werkers in die plaats, zoals aandeelhouders geen enkel zicht of voeling hebben op en met de exploitatie der loon- en weddetrekkenden ten einde hun geëiste dividenden te verzekeren.

Simpel, niet?

Maar wat wil je?

Dat een burgerlijke prof iets begrijpt of zou kunnen begrijpen van de conditie van een arbeider?

Er zijn of waren er, Marcel Liebman bvb, maar dat zijn of waren zeer ernstige uitzonderingen.

Neen, de hedendaagse experten van de macht werken voor de solde van de macht.

Arthur Koestler noemde deze erudiete elite de call girls van de macht! Vetbetaalde luxe hoeren dus.

Wat verdedigen deze call girls nu onder andere?

Ze zijn voor de afschaffing van de huidige werkloosheidsregelingen. Ze zijn voor de afschaffing van de minimumlonen om meer jobs en werk te creëren.

Dit is de schepping van georganiseerde honger, wat mij betreft.

En honger beste vrienden en vriendinnen is een interessant wapen van massavernietiging maar geen landen worden ingenomen door het Amerikaanse leger of de Nato om dat wapen te vinden en te vernietigen.

Honger smoort de opstand in het hoofd door een terreuraanslag op de buik en onderbuik.

Als mensen voor een habbekrats aan euros moeten gaan werken, kunnen ze amper overleven. Het is de deur wagenwijd openen naar Amerikaanse toestanden waarbij mensen full time werken en toch ONDER de armoedegrens terecht komen. Willen ze hun families voeden en de huur betalen moeten ze dikwijls meerdere jobs combineren. En dan is er geen tijd meer om na te denken of bezig te zijn met zoiets elementairs als de opvoeding van hun eigen kinderen.

Michael Moore legde deze processen pijnlijk bloot in zijn Columbine en andere documentaires.

Ook in Turkije gelden deze praktijken en guess what?

Dat is precies wat de gangsters van de Europese commissie ook willen! Met zijn allen op weg naar een georganiseerde armoede ten einde de crisis te bestrijden... waarvoor wij NIET eens verantwoordelijk zijn tenzij u bankspeculant bent of nog erger!

Geraard den duivel Schröder en de Duitse sociaaldemocraten die als eersten de minimumlonen de nek om draaiden in West-Europa.

Hun hedendaags Vlaams schoothondje die zich meer en meer begint te gedragen als een Duitse scheper. Bartje de Wevermans, steeds te zien in dure restaurants samen met de leiders van de MR.

Het is evident dat ook zij daar de realiteit van het bestaan van de keukens ontkennen.

Murray Menzies, an artist who has designed and printed numerous artistamps, is presently in prison in New Zealand (for a "drugs" offence done by his flatmate, who did not confess, so Murray got the blame!)

He is now in jail until at least March 2014.  I have been writing to him and sending magazines and booklets and stamps, but he got so many stamps that the prison bosses have now told him that "stamps are illegal contraband" and may not be sent in to the jail.  So just write him letters, send brochures ABOUT your stamps, (and also send return-addressed envelopes with your artistamps affixed!)

° Het confessionaliseren van gelijk welke les onder de noemers en maskers van labels als « maatschappelijke overtuigingen of stromingen in dialoog », « kennisgeving van het religieuze feit », « specifieke geschiedenis der godsdiensten », « samen leven is samen leren » en andere nonsens

VORMT EEN ECHTE BEDREIGING VAN DE NEUTRALITEIT VAN HET OFFICIEEL ONDERWIJS en schept een nieuw privilege, nieuwe mogelijkheden voor de godsdiensten in dat specifieke kader. Het is het openen van een nieuwe achterdeur voor de introducttie van de godsdiensten in het publieke onderwijs.

De IVVD werd opgericht te Oslo in Noorwegen in augustus 2011. Hun 2de congres had plaats in Mar Del Plata, Argentinië, in november 2012.

Het 3de congres gebeurde in Conception, Chili, in november 2013.

Het 4de congres zal plaats grijpen te Londen op 11 augustus 2014 in de Conway Hall, mythisch oord van het Britse militantisme, 25 Red Lyon Square.

PROGRAMMA

‘s Morgens : conferentie door Keith Porteous Wood, directeur van de National Secular Society (Vrije Denken Engeland) rond het thema « de misdaden van de kerken en justitie voor hun slachtoffers ».

‘s Namiddags : meeting over de scheiding tussen kerk en staat.

Alle organisaties van de deelnemende landen en alle deelnemers aan het congres kunnen openlijk debateren over deze onderwerpen en over de situatie in hun eigen land. Dit is een belangrijke nieuwe stap in de ontwikkeling van de IVVD en het Europese bureau voor de coördinatie van het Vrije Denken.

Daarom roepen wij alle vrijdenkers op om deel te nemen aan deze gebeurtenis en om financieel de voorbereiding van dit wereldcongres te ondersteunen.

In maart 2014 werd ik verkozen tot nederlandstalig ondervoorzitter van een nieuwe kring voor het vrije denken.

De kring is tweetalig maar heeft slechts een handvol Nederlandstalige leden.

Ja maar Guido hoor ik jullie al zeggen. Zijn er al niet genoeg vrijdenkersorganisaties in beide landsgebieden ?

Er zijn er NOOIT genoeg, is mijn antwoord.

2de punt is dat deze kring essentieel verschilt van andere verenigingen doordat hij

1De absolute scheiding van kerk en staat verdedigt

2De autoriteit van het politieke systeem verwerpt

3De autoriteit van de economie en het kapitaal verwerpt

Het vrije denken houdt in dat iedereen het recht heeft op zijn eigen overtuiging, om te geloven of niet te geloven maar dit is een privézaak en mag niet het onderwerp vormen van een overheidssubsidiëring.

Dat houdt in dat wij de financiering van de erediensten en het religieuze privé-onderwijs

door de overheid verwerpen want dit is een aantasting van de neutraliteit van de staat.

Het compromis dat tot stand kwam na de schoolkwestie is een totale capitulatie van dat principe en een oprechte waarachtige democratie onwaardig.

Wij hebben dan ook gekozen om zelf een feitelijke vereniging te zijn, GEEN VZW bvb omdat wij alle subsidies weigeren. Wij rekenen enkel op de steun en giften van de leden en simpatisanten van de kring voor het vrije denken.
